Brown Pelican

Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)

  • Live along coastal waters of the Americas
  • Weigh between 6 and 12 pounds (2.7 - 5.4 kg)
  • Wingspan of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 - 2.4 m)
  • While flying, they scoop up fish from water with large bill
  • Bill pouch holds up to 10 liters of water which drains before swallowing fish
  • Incubate eggs by standing on them

Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)

  • Songbird native to North and Central America
  • Approximately 8 inches (20 cm) in length
  • Males mostly red with dark areas in the wings and black around the bill
  • Females pale brown with red accents on the wings, tail and crest
  • Eat seeds, insects and fruits

Emu

Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae)

  • Second largest bird in the world
  • Up to 6 1/2 feet (2 meters) tall and up to 100 pounds (45 kg)
  • Can run up to 30 miles per hour (48 kph)
  • Their eggs can weigh up to 2 pounds (900 grams)
  • Native to Australia

  • The largest native North American bird
  • Males up to 5 feet in length and weigh up to 25 pounds
  • Average wing span is over 6 feet
  • Get their name from the trumpet-like sound that they make
