- Native to Africa and Southwestern Asia
- Hunt mammals such as gazelles and impala
- Only 12,000 left in the wild

- Spend most of their lives in water; come out to feed on grass
- Can run at speeds up to 20 mph (32 kph) for short distances
- Live in Sub-Saharan Africa (Zambia, Tanzania)
Somali Wild Ass
Somali Wild Ass (Equus africanus somaliensis)
- Smallest of the wild equids (horses, zebras and asses)
- Average 4 feet (1.2 meters) high and weigh about 600 pounds (272 kg)
- Live in desert areas in Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea
- Legs have horizontal black stripes
- Eat grasses and shrubs
- Critically endangered
